My wife was hesitant to hire someone to help us pick colors but we felt pleased with our decision to hire Miriam in the end. The only disclaimer I’d add is that the process was more expensive than I thought it would be. Miriam was upfront about her pricing but she did not mention that she charged for the report writing time (it was 30 min and is an understandable charge but I wasn’t expecting it).
She also took longer in the house than I had expected (2.5 hours i think ) but was not dawdling. Likely it had to do with the size of the house (we were painting every room). Either way it ended up being more than I thought but I’d still recommend it and I do recommend Miriam.

We had a dark basement with old-fashioned wood paneling that we hoped, after adding a bathroom, could be brightened to serve as a more welcoming family room/guest room. The only ‘given’ was the fabric of a futon cover. My husband and I spent so much time debating which color to choose. Should we paint the entire space with one color or use a different color on an accent wall? Which wall should be the accent wall? Do we highlight the structural columns? Which white for the bathroom trim? And then what should we choose for the stairway leading to the basement? In one visit, Miriam Stern asked us all the right questions, found just the right colors and offered just the right advice. We think the family room and bathroom look great, including a soft warm purple accent wall that we would never have been able to find on our own and a cream color which does, as Miriam predicted, add lightness without the harshness of a purer white.
